AI Recommended Skill Management

Updated November 1, 2026 | 4 min read

AlphaLearn’s Skills section is where you set up and manage skills, and most of the heavy lifting is done by AI: it suggests the skills each role needs and tags the courses that teach them. You review and confirm every suggestion before it’s saved – nothing changes your skill framework until you do.

Go to Settings → Skills. It has five tabs: Workflow, Skills, Skill Sets, Trainees and Reports.

Step 1: Choose Your Industry

The first time you open Settings → Skills, it asks for your industry. This is a one-time setup and it is required – the tabs unlock once it’s set.

  1. Pick your industry from the list, or choose Other (please specify) and type it.
  2. Click Save.

AI uses the industry to suggest skills relevant to your organisation. Change it later with Change next to the industry, at the top of the Workflow tab.

The Rating Scale

Skills are measured on a five-level scale, numbered 0 to 4:

  • 0 – No Experience: No prior knowledge or exposure to this skill.
  • 1 – Beginner: Basic awareness; can perform tasks with guidance.
  • 2 – Intermediate: Works independently on routine tasks with minimal support.
  • 3 – Advanced: Handles complex scenarios; can guide others when needed.
  • 4 – Expert: Deep mastery; mentors others and drives skill strategy.

Open Rating scale at the top of the Workflow tab to see it at any time.

Note: A required level and a level taught by a course are always 1 or higher. Level 0 (No Experience) is only used when an admin or manager records it for a trainee – for example after a baseline check of a new joiner.

AI Skill Requirements by Role

A role is a combination of Department and Designation (for example Sales · Manager). For each role, AI suggests 6 to 10 skills with the level the role needs, tuned to your industry. Nothing is saved until you confirm it.

Go to Settings → Skills → Workflow → Skill Requirements by Role.

  1. To generate for every role at once, click Generate skills for n roles. To generate for one role, select it and click Generate for this role. AI works in the background, with a progress bar showing how many are done.
  2. Select a role to review it: change a level by clicking another level button, remove a skill with the red x, or add one in Add skill to this role – pick a library skill, choose a suggestion, or type a new name.
  3. Click Confirm role when the list is right – the skills become the role’s requirements and the next role opens. Confirm all n confirms several at once.

To change a confirmed role later, open it and edit the list – changes save automatically. For a fresh AI set, click Regenerate; current skills stay active until you confirm the new ones, and Keep current skills discards them.

Tip: Prefer not to use AI for a role? Click Add skills manually and build the list yourself. Role skill generation is free – it does not use AI credits.

AI Course Skill Tagging

Tagging a course tells AlphaLearn which skills it teaches and the level a trainee reaches after completing it. When a trainee completes a tagged course, the skills are added to their profile automatically.

Go to Settings → Skills → Workflow → Course Skill Tagging.

  1. Click Tag n courses with AI to tag every untagged course, or select one and click Tag this course. AI reads the course title and description and picks 2 to 6 skills from your library, each with the level the course reaches.
  2. Select a course to review it: change levels, remove tags or add one (Tag a skill to this course), then click Confirm tags. Skills that roles require but no course teaches yet are suggested under the add box.

Course Skill Tagging in AlphaLearn LMS

If AI finds no matching skill in your library, the course stays untagged – add tags by hand or leave it. You can also tag from the course itself: Courses → open the course (View Details) → Skills field → Add Skills, or on an assignment, Add / Edit Assignment Settings → Skills → Add Skills. On a course, Suggest skills with AI opens Course Skill Tagging in a new tab, and skills you confirm there appear on the course automatically.

Note: Course skill tagging does not use AI credits.
